Acute Pharmacopoeia

swallowing your words
razor blade shaped pills
shredded my heart
as they passed by
my stomach distends
before erupting in a burst of
vomit-coated letters
I keep reaching for you
always the same result
I must be masochistic
because I keep crawling back
all I want is a side-long glance
a caress of my cheek
that’s not true, is it?
oh I want so much more
I want everything
thrust those pills back in my palm
I’ll devour them again
hoping they’ll taste more like
sweet sticky honey love
than the bitter greens of truth
am I fool?
most days, I believe I am
