Take It Away!

take it all away! she screamed
as her fists hit the mirror over and over again
the regrets and abuse and missteps and misuse
the hurt and the tears and the cold accusations
the voices they came from all different directions
a sister, a mother, a lover, a husband

she stooped and she bowed filled with breathless remorse
her heart came to realize she could take no more
with a steady hand and a more steadfast will
she lifted the blade, caught her reflection, stilled
noticed pale blue eyes puffy and wide
her hair more grey than it had been last year
she hardly recognized her own face
a little too thick and a little too…. her

how long had it been since the last time
rather than that of another’s
she’d looked at her own self from her own eyes
dropped to her knees and shuddered and cried

she wept for her losses and then her mistakes
she wept for heart pains and all of her aches
she wept because she was never enough
she wept because compromise was her daily bluff

take it away! just take it all away!
I can’t take any more, just… take it… away
